Medical Illustration at 2024 SFN

At the 2024 Society for Neuroscience conference, I had the opportunity to present a poster titled “Medical Illustration in Neuroscience: A Historical Perspective,” co-authored with Scott Weldon. The poster explored the evolution of medical illustration within the field of neuroscience—from the anatomical drawings of Vesalius and Cajal to modern digital and 3D visualization tools. Our goal was to highlight how medical artists have shaped the understanding and communication of complex neurological concepts across centuries.

To my surprise and delight, the poster generated significant interest. Attendees from a wide range of specialties, neuroscientists, educators, illustrators, and clinicians—stopped by to discuss the content and share their own experiences with visual communication in science. Many expressed enthusiasm for the historical narrative and appreciation for the illustrations that were showcased, which spanned both traditional and contemporary techniques.

What resonated most with the audience was the idea that medical illustration is not merely decorative but foundational to scientific progress, education, and patient care. Several attendees even mentioned how illustration had influenced their own learning or surgical planning.

Overall, the reception to the poster was overwhelmingly positive, and I left the session energized by the number of meaningful conversations it sparked. It was a rewarding reminder that medical illustration continues to play a vital role in neuroscience, not only in the past, but in the future as well.
